Western Wayne Middle School held their annual 8th Grade Moving-Up Ceremony on Thursday, June 15, in the middle school gym.  All 8th grade students received awards in various categories for excellence or improvement in all academic and unified arts classes.  In addition, students received awards for good citizenship, excellent work habits, and for a variety of high academic achievements such as making the honor roll for 11 quarters in middle school from 6th through 8th grade.  It is also a Western Wayne Middle School tradition for many years that two outstanding students, one male and one female, are recognized for their patriotism and leadership among other qualities.  The local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the local American Legion present these awards.

Charlene Edgerton and Eloise Fasshauer presented the Daughters of the American Revolution Award to 8th grader Jamie Bryan.  Jamie received the good citizenship medal from the Daughters of the American Revolution for being an outstanding student in the 8th grade class who exhibits the qualities of honor and honesty, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism. George Shaffer presented the American Legion Award to 8th grader Leonard Maiocco.

Lenny received this annual award for being an outstanding student in the 8th grade class who exhibits the qualities of honor, scholarship, Americanism, leadership, and courage. Western Wayne Middle School students and faculty participated in the annual Student versus Faculty Basketball Game in which an 8th grade team of students, who volunteer for the event, play against some of their middle school teachers. Ms. Elizabeth Watson, Middle School assistant principal, served as coach for the student team and Mrs. Kristen Donohue, Middle School principal, served as referee at this fun-filled event that took place on Friday, May 26, in the middle school gym. Student council students served as D.J.’s, middle school band students played in a pep band, and many students in grades 6 through 8 were able to try their luck at throwing a shot at half-court. Overall, it was a great day for students and faculty to gather to have some fun with each other and build morale before the end of the school year.

Also, the following individuals and groups made it into the Finals (top 10) in their events: Rachel Tuman for Career Prep, 5th place overall; Adelaide Treibley, Ava Compton, Morgan Coccodrilli, Jenna Eldred, Caydence Faatz, and Julia Lamberton for Chapter Team, 6th place overall; Emma Pontosky and Paige Moore for Children’s Story, 3rd place overall; Ava Compton and Adelaide Treibley for Environmental Engineering, 10th place overall; Haley Estus, Caydence Faatz, and Julia Lamberton for Leadership Strategies, 9th place overall.

Creating bottle rockets, precisely using laser lights, and using interpersonal skills and linguistic communication skills to build an object, were just some of the tasks that students tackled at the Northeast Regional Science Olympiad Competition on March 8, 2017, at Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus.

Team mates Celeste and Rachel, 8th grade, placed first in their event called Write it/ Do it.  The girls explained how the event involved them very precisely communicating with each other.  For the event, Celeste had the task of looking at materials to build an object.  Then she had a limited time to write extremely clear directions for Rachel to use to make the object.  Finally, Rachel had a set amount of time to create the object based on Celeste’s directions.

Celeste, who is used to working by herself to complete tasks efficiently, said this experience helped her to build her confidence in others’ work abilities.

“I gained trust in other people because I knew that Rachel understood my instructions,” Celeste explained.

Rachel, also, learned a lesson from the experience involving analytical skills.

“I learned how to read information carefully because I had to pay attention to what Celeste said to do without any other instruction,” Rachel said.  Rachel further explained that the event was challenging because she had more materials in front of her than she needed to build the object.  Therefore, making Celeste’s directions even more instrumental in the construction process.
