Fundraiser to benefit new PROSPER program!

There will be a multi-vendor fundraiser to help benefit Western Wayne School District’s new PROSPER program.

This new initiative, Promoting School-Community-university Partnership to Enhance Resilience (PROSPER), utilizes evidence based drug and alcohol prevention programs in the school to reduce adolescent substance abuse as well as other problematic behaviors. It also sponsors Strengthening Families a seven week program for youth ages 10-14 years and their parents or caregivers which improves parenting skills, builds life skills in youth and strengthens family bonds.
Each participating vendor has promised to gift at least 10% of their profit in support of Western Wayne’s PROSPER project. As a society, we all can do our part in strengthening our communities, local families and especially our youth.

Fundraiser dates and times are:

October 11, 2017 at Robert D. Wilson Elementary School from 3 P.M.-6 P.M.
October 25, 2017 at EverGreen School from 3 P.M.-6 P.M.
November 8, 2017 at Western Wayne Middle School from 3 P.M.-6 P.M.

RDW Kindness Club Receives Donation

The Kindness Club at R.D. Wilson Elementary is up and running again for the fourth consecutive year. The club, which was starting as part of Rachael’s Challenge, includes a rotation of fifth grade students who develop projects to spread kindness in the school and community. Last year’s students decided to post kind messages on the new electronic sign at the school’s entrance. A community member saw the sign and called the school to ask about the club. Ms. Booth, the club’s advisor, gave examples of the projects that students had developed over the past few years. The community member (who wishes to remain anonymous) was so inspired that she offered to donate $100 to the cause.

Students (Grace Langendoerfer, Zoe Albitz, Mason Rush, Samantha Linn, Annaliese Dickison, and Madison Weist) will use the funds to buy art supplies, props, and other small necessities to carry out their wonderful projects. Thank you again to our generous donor!

Congratulations Coach Justin Collins

Western Wayne’s Track and Field Coach Justin Collins was recently nominated to the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

At Western Wayne High School, Justin was a 3x District II Champion in the Long Jump; a 2x Champion in the Triple Jump; a 3x League All-Star; and 3x Scranton Times All-Regional selection. Justin was a 3x PIAA State Medalist’ twice in the Long Jump and once in the Triple Jump. He was also a 1000 point scorer in basketball, and a 2x League All-Star and Scranton Times All-Regional selection. He was selected as the Wayne Country Player of the Year in 1999. Just was a 4x NCAA Div II Track & Field All-American in the Long Jump while at Kutzstown University. He was also a multiple time All-Conference/All-PSAC selection and a 7x Individual PSAC/ECAC Conference Champion. In 2004 Justin was named Outstanding Field Athlete at the PSAC’s Indoor Conference Championships; the Indoor PSAC’s Track & Field Athlete of the Year; US Track Coaches Associations Regional Athlete of the Year; Men’s Track & Field captain and MVP. He was also named Kutztown’s Male Athlete of the Year. Justin holds many Kutztown and PSAC Track & Field records and led his team to 3 Outdoor and 2 Indoor PSAC/ECAS championships.

Western Wayne to Host Cavalcade of Bands on Wednesday, October 11

The Western Wayne School District will host a Cavalcade of Bands event on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at their football stadium starting at 6:30 p.m. Many local schools will present their field shows with Western Wayne set to perform their disco-themed show as the final performance. There will be food and other merchandise available for sale at the event. The public is invited to come out and support local marching bands. EverGreen Elementary Hosted Event for Fire Prevention Week

Chief Koch and his firefighters from Hamlin Fire & Rescue were at Western Wayne’s EverGreen Elementary on Friday, October 6, to discuss fire prevention and safety with all students. Students were able to see fire fighters in their turn-out gear, different tools used to fight fires, different pieces of equipment used at fire scenes, and they were able to walk through the smoke house set up at the school as a simulation. Through this presentation, students learned valuable lessons that they will be able use to in their lives. In preparation of this event, teachers asked their students to write essays about Fire Prevention and Safety. Two students won the essay contest and received bikes as their prizes. EverGreen Bus Safety

EverGreen Elementary was thrilled to host Mr. Bill Hemmler and his wife Gayle on Thursday, October 5. They volunteered their time, buses, and expertise in bus safety for the students in Kindergarten through 5^th grade.

Students Attend Women in Science Symposium

The third annual Women in Science Symposium was held on September 19 at the Heritage Night Club at Woodloch Resort. It was hosted by the Wayne Pike Workforce Alliance and the Lacawac Sanctuary& Biological Field Station.

The purpose of the event was to give students, like women, minorities and other underdeveloped groups, information on STEM career paths, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education. Students met with representatives from local colleges to discuss career options, hear presentations from female, working professionals and had the opportunity to speak with these professionals after the presentations finished.
